Meet the Challenge Contestants!

October 21, 2010 by

The Enterprise Challenge is right in the thick of the competition!  There are 17 entrepreneurs vying for the cash prizes in our business plan contest.  I’ve been getting to know the contestants and have been very impressed with their hard work and effort thus far.  There’s a very broad mix of entrepreneurs, experience levels and businesses, which is adding a lot to the competition.  Some of the entrepreneurs have started networking and learning from each other, even offering to help one another on their business plans.

The contestants have each submitted their executive summary that are out to the opening round judges for feedback.  Next week they’ll have the chance for one-on-one meetings with business advisors and a workshop to prepare for the Investment Round Trade Show event in early November. The Investment Round will be set up as a trade show event, with approximately 35 judges that have $1,000 ‘Investment (play) Bucks’ to invest in a minimum of five companies; the top eight ‘money’ winners will move on to the next round of the competition.

Here’s a snapshot of the participants. Some businesses are still in the planning stages, so they may not be ready to launch their official name yet, and others have websites and storefronts that you can visit for more information!

The dust has settled and we officially have at least sixteen entrepreneurs who will vie for top honors in our business plan contest.  We have some great emerging businesses competing for prizes and recognition – the competition should be intense.  It is especially rewarding to also see a great mix of contestants with a varied backgrounds and experience levels.

Contestants include a retail boutique, jewelry designer, winery, animal care products wholesaler, contractor, niche organic food processors, service providers (communications, social media consulting, wellness, industrial-related) and some in the renewable energy field.   A few are in the idea stage, others are planning to start in the next year and a few are already in business.

We are very encouraged by the response to our inaugural business plan contest.  Next steps will be for teams to attend an orientation session, gather some feedback as to the level of assistance they would like and then plan accordingly.  We want to offer them the chance to network, meet with SCORE counselors and the Small Business Development Center as well.  We’ll have more information posted on this site about each contestant next week and will keep you updated as the contest progresses!
